Making Murals
Teacher and student artists worked with renowned mural artist and Davis author Alice Mizrachi to create two murals that reflect the unique essence of Minneapolis, MN, the host city of the recent National Art Education Association convention, and amplify positive messages about our collective community.
To inspire their creative process, teacher artists participated in a discussion about Romare Bearden's masterpiece, The Block. As educators engaged in a meaningful discussion exploring this artwork, they made connections about “place” and its relevance in art and artmaking. Then, applying these connections, teachers created sections of the Minneapolis skyline using a variety of materials.
Students spent the day working, thinking, and creating together to empower each other and energize our communities. To inspire their creative process, student artists participated in an artist talk with Alice where they discussed the importance of collaboration. As they reflected on the discussion, students made connections about “identity” and its relevance in artmaking as they collaged letters from "Create Your World" a quote by St. Paul artist LeRoy Neiman.
